What to Look For? Your Hydrogen Bottle Checklist. 

 

Thinking of getting a hydrogen water bottle but not sure where to start? With the plethora of options flooding the market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you sift through the noise and make a savvy choice.

Since not all hydrogen bottles are the same, here's a quick guide to steer you in the right direction.

Quick Checklist: Features to Look for in Your Hydrogen Bottle:

✅ PEM & SPE Technology
✅ Off Gas Port
✅ Minimum 1.8 ppm Capability at 12oz
✅ Minimum 2.0 ppm Capability at 8oz
✅ Preferably a Solid Button over a touchscreen
✅ Self-Cleaning Mode

 

Why PEM & SPE Technology Matters:

PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) and SPE (Solid Polymer Electrolyte) technology are crucial. Without both, move on to the next bottle. The PEM technology makes sure to separate oxygen, chlorine, and ozone (by-products of the hydrogen gas process) from your water, ensuring they don’t contaminate what you drink.

Bottles lacking these technologies, like the one pictured below, have both plates exposed to water. This results in foggy water with a chlorine smell when opened – not ideal. These are often the cheapest options but not recommended.

Understanding Hydrogen Capacity and Volume:

Knowing your bottle's capacity is key to understanding how much hydrogen water you need for therapeutic benefits. The scientific community suggests a therapeutic dose ranges from 1-3 and some even debate 1.8-7.2 mg/L concentration per day.

Most companies provide Ppm(parts per million) or Ppb (parts per billion) values, but concentration (which needs volume) is a better indicator. With the concentration value and bottle volume, you can calculate how many refills are needed to reach your “therapeutic” dose equivalent to those in all the studies showing health benefits.

Let’s use our HydroV™ as an example with a daily dose target of 3mg/L :

• 12oz bottle that Generates 1800 ppb of Hydrogen which calculates to be 0.6mg/L 
• This means you need to drink 5 bottles daily to hit your 3mg/L dose target.
• Drink a bottle every 2 hours will surpass that target, giving you what you need.
• That is a total of 60 oz. or 1.7 Litres

Bottles meeting these criteria include Ion Bottle, Hydrolite, and Vitalyk.

Digital Buttons – Are They Better?

In short, no. Digital buttons are sensitive and can easily turn on unintentionally, draining the battery or damaging the generator. Unless you never take your bottle out, a solid button is preferable for on-the-go use. Also, wet or dirty fingers are not compatible with touch screen buttons as we know with our cell phones.

 

Opt for Self-Cleaning Mode:

This mode is essential for maintaining your generator and plates, especially if you aren’t confident in the cleaning process with citric acid. Remember to rinse the bottle post-clean and clean the body regularly.

 

Glass vs Plastic Bottles:

While not on our checklist, the choice between glass and plastic is personal. Here’s a quick breakdown:

• Plastic allows for a higher concentrations of H2 due to its pressure-holding ability.
• Knowing which plastic the bottle is made from is important.
